The Amish Are Getting Fracked

Molly Redden of The New Republic reports on energy companies’ exploitation of the Amish, and their religious prohibition against lawsuits, in Eastern Ohio. Though companies seeking to lease Amish land may commit fraud or violate contracts, “the Amish interpretation of the Christian Bible prohibits the use of courts,” Redden writes. “This has created a unique problem in the region,” she adds. “Home to the largest Amish community in the world, Eastern Ohio sits squarely on top of the Utica and Marcellus Shale formations, which contain billions in oil and gas recoverable through advances in hydraulic fracturing technology, or fracking.”
