Caught in Methodism’s Split Over Same-Sex Marriage

Sharon Otterman of The New York Times reports that because he performed the same-sex wedding of his son, the Rev. Dr. Thomas W. Olgetree, former dean of Yale Divinity School, faces a possible canonical trial for his actions. Olgetree is part of the United Methodist Church, which does not allow its clergy to perform same-sex marriage ceremonies. “Sometimes, when what is officially the law is wrong, you try to get the law changed,” Ogletree, who is still an emeritus professor of theological ethics at Yale, told Otterman. “But if you can’t, you break it.”
