Them and Them

Benjamin Wallace-Wells of New York investigates the divisions between the immigrant community and the growing ultra-Orthodox Jewish community in Ramapo, New Jersey. This past year, members of the Orthodox community gained control over the public schools, significantly cutting programs and causing controversy in the town. “The Hasidic political emergence in East Ramapo is often told as a story of aggression, of a growing community discovering its own power,” Wallace-Wells writes. “But it is also one of deep compassion and desperation.”
