Neurosurgeon’s Speeches Have Conservatives Dreaming of 2016

The New York Times’ Trip Gabriel profiles Dr. Benjamin Carson, a distinguished neurosurgeon, and his rise within the Republican Party. After a speech at last month’s National Prayer Breakfast, in which Carson criticized both Obamacare and higher taxes, conservatives have embraced Carson, some even calling for him to run for president. Speaking to Dr. Carson’s appeal, Republican consultant Alex Castellanos told Gabriel, “I think it speaks to the vacuum not just in the Republican Party but in politics. Anybody who is serious and thoughtful and an antipolitician is the opposite of the mess we’ve got now. If you can separate two Siamese twins, maybe you can separate Democrats and Republicans in Washington.”
