Pope Francis: Change Or More of The Same?

National Journal‘s Amy Sullivan reacts to the election of Pope Francis, noting he is a man of many firsts: Argentinian, a pope from the Americas, a Jesuit. Yet in his leadership, he may not bring much change. She writes, “The instant reaction to Bergoglio’s election, particularly from the American media, centered on the cardinal’s conservatism–his opposition to contraception use and his role in opposing Argentina’s successful adoption of civil unions–as if these positions were surprising … The pool of candidates was unfailingly conservative, with only slight variations in terms of emphasis and priorities.”
