Researchers at the United States Holocaust Memorial Museum recently uncovered an astounding 42,500 Nazi ghettos and camps throughout Europe, reports Eric Lichtblau at The New York Times. The research, which began 13 years ago, will be part of a multivolume encyclopedia published by the Holocaust museum. “The numbers are so much higher than what we originally thought,” says Hartmut Berghoff, director of the German Historical Institute. He continues, “We knew how horrible life in the camps and ghettos was, but the numbers are unbelievable.”
