Pope Marks 60th Anniversary of Second Vatican Council

Nicole Winfield of the Associated Press reports, “Pope Francis is commemorating the 60th anniversary of the opening of the Second Vatican Council, the landmark meetings that brought the 2,000-year-old Catholic Church into the modern era, amid continued disagreements about what the council taught that divides the faithful today.” Francis is leading a special mass to mark the occasion, which will include reenactments of the Vatican II opening ceremony. Francis has sought to emulate the revolutionary spirit of Vatican II in his papal leadership, emphasizing the important role of lay Catholics and soliciting their feedback in preparation for his own summit on the current state of the Catholic church next year.
