Gen Z Hindu Americans Reckon With Faith and Politics

Richa Karmarkar of Religion News Service reports that Hindu American young adults are struggling to separate their Hindu faith from the nationalistic politics of India’s president, Narendra Modi. Many Hindu student organizations on college campuses are associated with Modi’s political party, the BJP. Amar Shah, Northwestern University’s Hindu chaplain, said, “Right now, there is the appearance that Hinduism is inextricably tied to international Indian politics.” Karmarkar writes, “For American students looking for a Hinduism absolved of politics, there is a distinct lack of places to turn.”
