State Abortion Bans Face Religious Liberty Lawsuit From the Left

Laura Kusisto of The Wall Street Journal reports, “As bans on abortion take effect in a number of states, faith leaders with liberal views on the issue are taking a page out of the conservative legal playbook, arguing in new lawsuits that the restrictions infringe on their religious beliefs.” Faith leaders have argued that the bans infringe on their personal religious beliefs and prevent them from counseling their parishioners in accordance with their faith. Kusisto writes, “The decision about whether to challenge abortion restrictions on religious grounds has presented thorny questions for some left-leaning civil liberties advocates, who have often opposed the expansion of religious rights by lawmakers and the courts.”
