The Religious Leaders Caught in the Vaccine Wars

For The Atlantic, Mansee Khurana reports on clergy who are encouraging their communities to get vaccinated despite the requests from some congregants for religious exemptions. She writes, “Many people requesting exemptions have tried to strengthen their case with a written statement from a religious leader, but to some clergy, agreeing to support a person’s claim feels unjustifiable.” Even some outspoken conservative religious leaders, such as Pastor Robert Jeffress of First Baptist Dallas, have taken issue with the religious exemptions, fearing that they could erode other arguments for religious freedom.
