Megachurch Pastor Steps Down to Fight Charge of Concealing Father’s Alleged Child Sexual Abuse

Lateshia Beachum and Rachel Pannett of The Washington Post report, “Brian Houston, Australian pastor and co-founder of international megachurch Hillsong, announced on Sunday that he will be stepping down from his pastoral duties for the rest of the year to fight a charge of concealing child sexual abuse by his father.” Houston announced his decision by video during Sunday services, citing advice from the church’s board and outside counsel that it would be “best practice” to remove himself from leadership during the proceedings. Houston is charged with “concealing a serious indictable offense” and pleaded not guilty in Sydney, Australia, in October.
