They Executed People for the State of South Carolina. For Some, It Nearly Destroyed Them.

Chiara Eisner of The State reports that former executioners from the state of South Carolina are suffering mentally, physically, and spiritually because of their work. Multiple former executioners, including Terry Bracey, worried that their actions would have permanent impacts on their souls. He said, “I wonder whether God will ever forgive me now.” The former executioners are now speaking out to create change in the system, both for the wellbeing of future executioners and for the dignity of those condemned to death.
