Muslim Americans’ “Seismic Change”

Elizabeth Dias of The New York Times reports that 9/11 offered new challenges and possibilities for the American Muslim community. Sylvia Chan-Malik, an associate professor of American studies at Rutgers University, said, “It has caused incredible violence and pain and trauma, but it has also created incredible possibility and hope and new forms of community. It absolutely changed everything.” These changes have been coupled with a nearly twofold increase in the number of American Muslims living in the United States since the September 11 attacks.
