Nightly Prayers at the Mosque? Big Iftars? Vaccines? Ramadan 2021 Brings Decisions for Muslims.

Michelle Boorstein of The Washington Post outlines the religious, health, and safety dilemmas that American Muslims will face throughout the month of Ramadan. She writes, “Embedded in each of these choices is the same dilemma: how to make the holy month meaningful and communal when Muslims are going in all different directions about how to mark it.” One topic of particular concern is whether or not the receipt of the Covid-19 vaccine violates the mandatory fast during the daylight hours of Ramadan. This debate led the Islamic Medical Association of North America to release a statement outlining the vaccine’s permissibility during the day.
