U.S. Judge Will Not Stop Land Transfer For Rio Tinto Mine in Arizona

Ernest Scheyder of Reuters reports that a district judge has denied a request from Native Americans in Arizona to stop the transfer of land—which they believe to be holy—to the mining company, Rio Tinto. Scheyder writes, “The judge’s decision is likely to escalate the clash between members of Arizona’s San Carlos Apache Tribe, who consider the land home to deities, and Rio and minority partner BHP Group Plc.” Barring any reversal by a higher court, the land transfer is set to take place in March.
