Justices: California Can’t Enforce Indoor Church Service Ban

Jessica Gresko of the Associated Press reports, “The Supreme Court is telling California that it can’t bar indoor church services because of the coronavirus pandemic, but it can keep for now a ban on singing and chanting indoors.” In the decision handed down late Friday, the Court sided in two cases with evangelical churches seeking to prevent pandemic worship restrictions. Gresko notes, “Chief Justice John Roberts wrote that ‘federal courts owe significant deference to politically accountable officials’ when it comes to public health measures, but he said deference certainly ‘has its limits.’ Justice Amy Coney Barrett argued that the state’s singing ban required further review to see if it was being applied neutrally “across the board.”
