As Kavanaugh Hearings Begin, Two Views of Women’s Rights Emerge

The New York Times’s Sheryl Gay Stolberg reports that conflicting accounts of Judge Brett M. Kavanaugh’s views on women’s rights are set to be central to today’s Supreme Court confirmation hearings. Republicans plan to frame Kavanaugh as a judge who empowers women, while Democrats will present the judge as a far-right extremist who is against abortion. Stolberg adds, “Democrats will question him aggressively about his dissent in the case of Garza v. Hargan, in which he argued that a 17-year-old undocumented immigrant should not be permitted to have an immediate abortion.”
