Idea of Democrats Funding Anti-Abortion Candidates Draws Ire

The Associated Press’s Bill Barrow and David Crary report that abortion-rights activists are challenging Rep. Ben Ray Lujan of New Mexico after he suggested that the Democratic Congressional Campaign Committee (DCCC) is willing to fund candidates who do not support abortion rights. The DCCC chairman argues that Democrats will only be able to reclaim Congress if they win in Republican-leaning areas, which might require supporting Democratic candidates who oppose abortion rights. Karin Roland, a leading member of a pro-choice advocacy organization, said, “There is no future of the Democratic Party without women – so stop betraying them for a misguided idea of what’s needed to win elections.”
