Slaves of ISIS: The Long Walk of the Yazidi Women

For The Guardian, Cathy Otten reports on the aftermath of the kidnapping of Yazidi women and children by ISIS fighters in the summer of 2014. Thousands became victims of institutionalized rape: “Many of the stories about the abduction and enslavement of Yazidi women and children described them as ‘sex slaves’ and featured graphic, sometimes lurid, accounts by newly escaped survivors,” Otten writes. Although Iraqi forces have declared victory over ISIS in Mosul, the Yazidi community remains largely displaced in camps, rented homes, or forced asylum overseas.
