White House Acts to Roll Back Birth-Control Mandate for Religious Employers

The New York Times’s Robert Pear reports, “Federal officials, following through on a pledge by President Trump, have drafted a rule to roll back a federal requirement that many religious employers provide birth control coverage in health insurance plans.” On May 4, President Trump signed an executive order instructing agencies to accommodate conscience-based objections to the Affordable Care Act contraception mandate. Gretchen Borchelt, vice president of the National Women’s Law Center, points out that the new rule might be considered a violation of the Affordable Care Act provision that prohibits discrimination in health programs that receive federal funds.
