How Russia Became the Jihadists’ No. 1 Target

For POLITICO Magazine, Colin P. Clarke reports, “Russia is fast replacing the United States as the No. 1 enemy of Al Qaeda, the Islamic State and other Sunni jihadist groups motivated by violent and puritanical Salafist ideology.” Russia’s intervention in Syria and deployment of special forces around Libya have contributed to the shift. Clarke notes that it is too soon to tell if jihadists are behind Monday’s bombing of a subway in St. Petersburg that killed at least 10.
