How Mormon Principles and Grassroots Ideals Saved Utah

For POLITICO Magazine, Colin Woodard writes about a collaborative approach to city planning in Utah called Envision Utah. Embracing the LDS church’s history of precise urban planning and neighborliness, Envision Utah convenes meetings and conducts surveys to collect ideas and gauge interest for projects. Mike Leavitt, former governor of Utah, said of Brigham Young’s history of community building, “All of those decisions by Young were urban planning constructs, and somehow that ethic has seeped into the sinews of the state. Utah is a culture of planners and I think that may in some way even be mystical.”
