Southern Baptists: “Discontinue the Display of the Confederate Battle Flag”

Adelle M. Banks of Religion News Service writes, “The Southern Baptist Convention, born in 1845 in a split over its support for slavery, passed a resolution calling for Christians to quit using the Confederate flag.” Pastor Dwight McKissic drafted the resolution in part to memorialize those killed in the June 2015 shooting at Emanuel African Methodist Episcopal Church in Charleston, South Carolina. Russell Moore, the denomination’s public policy leader, said, “Today, the nation’s largest Protestant denomination voted to repudiate the Confederate battle flag and it’s time and well past time.”
