Atheists Gather on the Mall to Demonstrate their Political Muscle

Adelle M. Banks of the Religion News Service reports from the second “Reason Rally,” a gathering of atheists and other freethinkers held Saturday on the National Mall in the nation’s capital. Banks writes, “Its main goal was to show that nonbelievers, who make up as much as 23 percent of the U.S. public by some estimates, are a voting bloc worth courting in the November election.” Organizers estimate that 15,000 to 20,000 people attended, which fell short of the 30,000-attendee goal.
