A Brussels Mentor to the Young and Angry

The New York Times‘ Andrew Higgins and Kimiko de Freytas-Tamura report on Khalid Zerkani and his influence on radicalizing young Belgian Muslims in Brussels. Zerkani, known to his followers as the Santa Claus of Jihad, was arrested in 2014, but the extent of the network he built is only now being revealed after it emerged as a central component in both the Paris and Brussels terrorist attacks. “Mr. Zerkani has perverted an entire generation of youngsters, particularly in the Molenbeek neighborhood,” said the Belgian federal prosecutor, Bernard Michel.
