Vatican: Pope Didn’t Invite Bernie Sanders

At The Daily Beast, Barbie Latza Nadeau reports that Democratic Presidential candidate Bernie Sanders will attend a scholarly conference at the Vatican’s Pontifical Academy of Social Sciences amid controversy about papal interference in American politics. The Vatican quickly cleared up that Pope Francis did not personally invite Sanders and that the senator was offered an invitation after he had reached out to the Vatican to express his interest in Francis’ encyclical. “It does not signify any support of the campaign,” said Monsignor Marcelo Sánchez Sorondo, chancellor of the Pontifical Academy of Social Sciences.
