Wave of New State Bills: Religious Freedom or License to Discriminate?

At Al Jazeera, Sarah Posner reports that in response to the legalization of same-sex marriage, many conservative states are seeking to widen exemptions for providing services due to religious objections. In one example, the Kansas state legislature is facing a bill that would permit businesses to legally refuse services based on sexual orientation or marital states on the grounds of violating their religious beliefs. Eunice Rho of the American Civil Liberties Union said, “We are now seeing this reaction where people are claiming based on religious belief that there should be special authorization to break laws or have new rights.”
