United Methodist Church Elects First Openly Gay Bishop Despite Marriage Ban

Karen Oliveto makes her the UMC’s first openly gay bishop. Pengelly writes, “The leader of an evangelical group within the church said the result could lead ‘to the brink of schism.’”
