Ultra-Orthodox Candidates Elected As Israel’s Chief Rabbis

Jodi Rudoren of The New York Times reports, “In a victory for the ultra-Orthodox political parties that were shut out of Israel’s governing coalition this year, two candidates they backed were elected as Israel’s chief rabbis.” Rabbis David Lau and Yitzhak Yosef were elected to the position, and will rotate leadership of the rabbinical courts, which control marriage, adoption, conversion and other aspects of daily life for Israel’s Jews.
