U.S. Top Court Backs Obama, Invalidates Jerusalem Passport Law

At Reuters, Lawrence Hurley reports that the Supreme Court struck down a law passed by Congress in 2002, which allowed American citizens born in Jerusalem to indicate on their passports that they were born in Israel. “The city, considered holy to Jews, Muslims and Christians, is claimed by both Israelis and Palestinians and has been a major point of contention in the Middle East for decades,” Hurley writes. The Supreme Court ruled that the law encroached on the president’s “exclusive power” to recognize foreign governments.
