Two Speeches and a Tragedy

At The New Yorker, George Packer writes, “The Middle East and other regions of the Muslim world are going through an agony of largely self-inflicted destruction.” Packer says that while the U.S. and the Obama administration’s foreign policy didn’t help problems in the Middle East, they are not the root cause. Packer examines an Obama speech from Cairo, Egypt in 2009, which offered a a message of peace between America and the Muslim world, and his more tragic Nobel speech delivered in Oslo, Norway from later that same year. “That speech in Oslo, from the beginning of Obama’s Presidency, is the one that now has to guide him through to its end,” Packer writes.
