In The American Prospect, Amelia Thompson-DeVeaux traces the founding and legal work of the Becket Fund for Religious Liberty, the nonprofit firm defending Hobby Lobby in its fight against the Affordable Care Act’s contraception mandate. In its formative years, the Becket Fund quietly took cases from believers of all faiths and on both sides of the political aisle. But its defense of Hobby Lobby and other politically “edgier” cases has some accusing the firm of shifting right. Thompson-DeVeaux writes, “Regardless of the outcome in the Hobby Lobby case, it’s hard to imagine that Becket could return to its role as the quiet arbiter of free-exercise disputes—nor is it likely that it would want to.”
