The Case for Reparations

Ta-Nehisi Coates urges “a national reckoning” for American society in The Atlantic. His essay explores sagas of discriminatory housing policy, affirmative action, and the inequitable treatment of black Americans over the course of US history and ends with a call for “the full acceptance of our collective biography and its consequences” to rectify historic racial injustices. “It is as if we have run up a credit-card bill,” Coates argues, whose moral debt may be allayed only by “a revolution of the American consciousness.”
