About single mothers, Worthen writes, “Some have been persuaded by evangelicals that they have a stake in defending conservative ideas about gender and family. Others have found their own way to a rejection of the left’s vision of social welfare. Feminism fails to resonate with many of the women who seem most likely to embrace it.”
