Sex, Violence, and Radical Islam: Why “Persepolis” Belongs in Public Schools

At The Atlantic Noah Berlatsky finds fault in the Chicago Public School’s decision to censor Persepolis, a graphic memoir depicting the author’s experiences in the fundamentalist regime in Iran. Berlatsky believes that the decision is part of a larger problem of censorship in American institutions. “So we’re faced with a choice,” writes Berlatsky. “Do we want to micromanage our schools for ideological purity? Or do we want kids to learn something — even, sometimes, something with which we might disagree?”
