Now Gathering in Rome, a Conclave of Fallible Cardinals

The New York Times’ Laurie Goodstein looks at the history of sexual abuse cover-ups among the cardinals appointing the next pope. While only a few receive attention, Goodstein reports that most of the senior cardinals have some history with scandals. Justice Anne Burke, who previously served on the American bishop’s advisory board, said, “There’s so many of them. They all have participated in one way or another in having actual information about criminal conduct, and not doing anything about it. What are you going to do? They’re all not going to participate in the conclave?”
