Muslim Women Create a Mosque of Their Own in Los Angeles

At Religion Dispatches, Brie Loskota reports on the new Women’s Mosque of America, founded by M. Hamza Maznavi to prevent experiences of body policing and limitation frequent in mosques. “We respect the orthodoxy and we also want to push it,” she says. The mosque’s inauguration occurs in the midst of wider spiritual disaffection among millennials, who are increasingly cutting ties with religious institutions. “Instead of sliding out of the door of congregational and religious life,” Loskota writes, “the organizers behind the Women’s Mosque have channeled their energy into a creative, institution-building endeavor, aimed, in part at stemming that trend.”
