In Defiance of the Church, Some Catholic Women Seek Priesthood

Jeff Brady of NPR reports an unusual scene for a Roman Catholic mass: “The homily is interactive, there’s gluten-free communion bread, and the priest is a woman.” Many Catholic women today struggle to reconcile their beliefs on issues of gender equality with the church’s stance, which bans female ordination and the use of birth control. The organization Women’s Ordination Worldwide is hosting a conference in Philadelphia just before the papal visit. “Organizers expect hundreds of activists who want the Catholic Church to ordain women to attend,” Brady reports.
