Gay Rights, Religious Rights and a Compromise in an Unlikely Place: Utah

At The Washington Post, Niraj Chokshi recounts the debates that led to a historic compromise on LGBT rights between the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints and gay rights activists in Utah last month. The groups first came face-to-face in 2009, eventually agreeing to several anti-discrimination measures after extensive negotiation, Chokshi writes. “Within days, they sent a bill to the state legislature—and a message to a politically riven nation that compromise was possible, even on one of the most divisive social issues, even in one of its most conservative states.”
