Democrats’ Push To Create Military Chaplains For Atheists Falls Flat

Cheryl K. Chumley of The Washington Times reports that lawmakers “defeated a Democratic-sponsored amendment that would have created chaplains for atheists” in the military. She writes that New Jersey Rep. Robert Andrews, whose bill was backed by the Secular Coalition for America, “wanted to give atheists the same opportunity to visit with counselors and obtain the same personalized guidance as those of the faith.” The coalition said counselors and psychiatrists are “inadequate substitution[s]” for chaplains because their discussions are not confidential.
