Colleges and Evangelicals Collide on Bias Policy

“After this summer, the Bowdoin Christian Fellowship will no longer be recognized by the college,” Michael Paulson reports in The New York Times. The school has revoked the group’s recognition after it refused to adhere to a non-discrimination policy, which allows any student to assume leadership of a student group. Similar conflicts have arisen at other schools, where evangelical students argue they must have doctrinal standards for leaders, even while welcoming anyone to participate. “But they insist that, in choosing leaders, who often oversee Bible study and prayer services, it is only reasonable that they be allowed to require some basic Christian faith,” Paulson writes.
