posted on September 21, 2015

David Remnick of The New Yorker writes on Emanuel A.M.E. Church in Charleston, South Carolina, the oldest historically black church in the state, where Dylann Roof shot and killed nine people in June. “The tradition of forgiveness in the black church is long,” Remnick writes, while also noting that some critics believe “the surface tone of conciliation … helps to smother the possibility of political change in places like Charleston.”
