Arizona Rep. Juan Mendez: We Need Atheist Invocations
posted on May 15, 2014At Religion News Service, Chris Stedman interviews Arizona state Representative Juan Mendez, a Democrat “who received a great deal of national attention last year after revealing his atheism while offering an invocation at the Arizona House.” Mendez wishes more non-theist politicians would open up about their lack of belief. “Nontheists are already involved in politics—but because of the political risk involved in being authentic about atheism, too many people have chosen to hide their nonbelief,” he says. “I think it’s really damaging to the democratic process to make authenticity taboo.”
