An Exchange of Views, Some in Accord: President Obama Meets With Pope Francis

posted on March 27, 2014

Michael D. Shear and Jim Yardley of The New York Times report on President Obama’s first meeting with Pope Francis on Thursday morning. The president presented the pope with seeds from the White House garden in a chest “made from reclaimed wood from the Basilica of the National Shrine of the Assumption of the Blessed Virgin Mary in Baltimore.” Shear and Yardley write, “What remains unknown so far is what the two men talked about in private, joined only by their interpreters. There were no staff in the small library once the doors closed. But both sides have an interest in shaping the story of the meeting. The United States and the Vatican are likely to issue statements on Thursday describing how the meeting went and what was discussed. The contents of those statements — and what they include or do not include — may speak volumes.”
