ACLU Sues, Claiming Catholic Hospitals Put Women at Risk

At NPR, Julie Rovner reports, “The ACLU and the ACLU of Michigan have filed suit in federal court in Michigan charging that the United States Conference of Catholic Bishops forces hospitals to deliver what amounts to substandard medical care.” The hospital sent a woman home without informing her that her fetus had virtually no chance of survival and could pose a health risk to herself. “While we’re all entitled to our religious beliefs, hospitals should not be entitled to impose their religious beliefs on patients and medical staff who do not share them,” said Dr. Douglas Laube, professor at the University of Wisconsin.
