Aziz Ansari: Why Trump Makes Me Scared for My Family

posted on June 27, 2016

In The New York Times, comedian Aziz Ansari, the child of Muslim immigrants, writes that Donald Trump’s anti-Muslim rhetoric has caused him to fear for his family’s safety. Ansari writes, “In our culture, when people think ‘Muslim,’ the picture in their heads is not usually of the Nobel Peace Prize winner Malala Yousafzai, Kareem Abdul-Jabbar or the kid who left the boy band One Direction. It’s of a scary terrorist character from ‘Homeland’ or some monster from the news.”

Northern Ireland Left Reeling After Brexit Vote

posted on June 27, 2016

At Deutsche Welle, Peter Geoghegan writes about the impact Brexit could have on Northern Ireland, a U.K. region that voted to stay in the European Union. The EU was an important mediator of British-Irish tensions in the region, and some Irish politicians have expressed worries over Brexit’s impact on the Northern Ireland peace process. Geoghegan writes, “A referendum on Irish unification is unlikely in the short term. But the future of Northern Ireland is far more uncertain now than it has been for many years.”

In The New York Times, Trip Gabriel and Michael Luo report that conservative Christian activist James Dobson suggested that Donald Trump recently accepted Christ and is now a born-again Christian. Dobson made the claim in a June 21 interview with the Rev. Michael Anthony at a meeting between Trump and hundreds of conservative Christian leaders. Though Trump has struggled to discuss his faith, he has gained the support of Christian leaders since becoming the presumptive Republican. Gabriel and Luo write, “In his interview, Dr. Dobson conceded that Mr. Trump did not exactly fit the typical mold of an evangelical.”

The Atlantic’s Peter Beinart writes that Donald Trump falsely claimed that the public knows nothing about Hillary Clinton’s faith during a meeting with conservative evangelical leaders yesterday. Beinart writes, “Biographies and magazine profiles have been stressing Clinton’s religiosity for decades. In his 1993 New York Times Magazine profile, ‘Saint Hillary,’ the late journalist Michael Kelly stressed Clinton’s relationship with Reverend Don Jones, the youth pastor in her Methodist church in Park Ridge, Illinois.”
