Vatican to Recognize Palestinian State in New Treaty

At The New York Times, Gaia Pianigiani and Rick Gladstone write, “The Vatican said Wednesday that it had concluded a treaty to recognize Palestinian statehood, a symbolic but significant step welcomed by Palestinians but upsetting to the Israeli government.” While an anonymous Israeli official argued that the treaty hinders the peace process, Hanna Amireh, leader of a Palestinian committee on church affairs, praised the treaty for “recognition of the Palestinian character that has a clear message for coexistence and peace.” The treaty still must be signed and formally approved before it is valid.
