SCOTUS Opens Same-Sex Marriage in Several States

Josh Gerstein of POLITICO reports, “The Supreme Court has turned down all seven pending petitions urging the court to decide whether there is a right to same-sex marriage under the U.S. Constitution.” The move surprised many analysts, as the court had already stepped in to halt same-sex marriage in Utah and Virginia after their bans were overturned. The justices’ action clears the way for the legalization of same-sex marriage in as many as eleven states. “I think this is a terrific result, for now,” said Richard Socarides, a gay-rights advocate and former adviser to President Bill Clinton. “It’s a little bit incremental, but I think it’s a fantastic result and we should celebrate today.”
