In an excerpt from TIME’s new book Hillary: An American Life, Elizabeth Dias reports on the role of Hillary Clinton’s Methodist faith. Although Clinton’s faith may not be publicly prominent, she views as the background music in her life, driving her to public service and private reflection. “It’s there all the time. It’s not something you have to think about, you believe it,” Clinton said in an interview with The New York Times. “You have a faith center out of which the rest flows.”
