How the FBI Tried to Block Martin Luther King’s Commencement Speech

At The Atlantic, Martin Dobrow, a professor of communications at Springfield College, writes about the FBI’s attempts to stop Martin Luther King from delivering Springfield’s 1964 commencement address. Glenn Olds, a “maverick college president,” was a pacifist, Methodist minister, and supporter of progressive causes. He refused to disinvite King, and, on June 14, 1964, King delivered what was remembered as a “riveting and influential” speech at Springfield’s commencement.
